Our Lady of Guadalupe Memorial dedicated at
Mt. Calvary Cemetery, KCK

Catholic Cemeteries dedicated a beautiful, new memorial to Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Kansas City, Kan., on Tuesday, Dec. 12. This date commemorated the appearance of Mary, the mother of Jesus, to Juan Diego in 1531 on a hill outside Mexico City, Mexico. Our Lady of Guadalupe is patroness of the Americas and has special significance to persons of Mexican descent.

Rev. Dan Gardner, pastor of St. Joseph-St. Benedict Parish, offered brief remarks at the ceremony and blessed the mosaic and memorial. Children from All Saints Elementary School sang musical selections during the program held on the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Robert W. Chenoweth, executive director, said this addition to the cemetery grounds reflects Catholic Cemeteries' commitment to perpetual care and beautification of the sites it operates and manages. "We are pleased to locate this memorial at Mt. Calvary and hope that many people will find comfort and solace in this beautiful religious art," he added.

The mosaic was crafted by artisans of Alexander Studio, Woodland Hills, Calif., a Catholic Cemeteries Conference supplier member. The mosaic is 5 feet tall by 3.5 feet wide and mounted on a granite wall (7 feet tall by 5 feet wide). For a donation of $200.00 to the memorial, Catholic Cemeteries will engrave a name of the donor or donor family on the reverse side of the granite wall.

The tradition of Guadalupe dates back 475 years to the miraculous account of the image of Our Lady imprinted on the cloak of Juan Diego and subsequent miracles. Juan Diego was canonized a saint on July 31, 2002 by Pope John Paul II.
