Unused burial space as a donation

Individuals with unused burial space are encouraged to consider donating the space back to Catholic Cemeteries for use by persons unable to pay for burial at their family's time of need.

Robert W. Chenoweth, Catholic Cemeteries executive director, said that this donation is tax deductible. His staff will provide the donor with a tax form showing today's value for the burial plot.

Chenoweth explained that two situations arise. First, Catholic Cemeteries serves families who are unable to pay the expense of burial space and funeral arrangements. This year, there have already been three cases where this has occurred.

"On the other hand," Chenoweth added, "another family might have originally purchased six or eight burial spaces, and their children have made their homes in other communities and states. These families will not likely need all eight spaces."

Chenoweth would like to match the need with donated space of burial plots and/or with contributions to offset the expense of charity burials. For more information or to make a donation to Catholic Cemeteries, call 913-371-4040
